Field Notes

The stops

01

Lime Kiln Point State Park

Daily 7:30a–8:00p · Discover Pass required for parking

One of the best land-based whale-watching spots anywhere, with a 1919 lighthouse on a rocky bluff. The interpretive center (open ~11a–4p in summer) covers resident orca pods and the old lime kiln the park is named for. "The Blowhole" snack stand is open for food and drinks in season.

02

San Juan County Park

Open year-round · day-use free, no Discover Pass needed

Rocky bluffs and a gravel beach looking straight across Haro Strait to Vancouver Island — the same stretch of water Lime Kiln overlooks, five minutes south. Picnic tables, a small shelter, and a boat launch; it's also a well-known whale-watching spot in its own right, minus the crowds.

03

Friday Harbor Jolly Trolley

Hop-on/hop-off · runs Memorial Day–Labor Day · $40 adult / $35 child (under 8) all-day pass

An open-air trolley loop connecting Friday Harbor, San Juan Vineyard, Lakedale Resort, the Sculpture Park, English Camp, Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm, the lavender farm — and Roche Harbor Resort itself is a stop, so you don't need to drive into town to ride it.

How to actually do it: No reservations — just show up at the Roche Harbor stop and flag it down (buses circle roughly every hour). Buy tickets by cash at the stop, or by card at the kiosk across from the Friday Harbor ferry landing if you're starting there. Full loop is ~1.5 hours; hop off anywhere and catch the next one about an hour later. Call 360-298-8873 or check the site the morning-of for exact daily times, since the posted schedule shifts with the ferry.
